River Report - September 2, 2016
The Old Au Sable Fly Shop Fishing Report.
It’s hard to believe that another fine Michigan Summer is nearly in the books—it’s been a good one. The River has treated us allvery well this season. There were lots of second and third year trout in the systems that were willing to play the game, so most anglers were happy having plenty of fish to catch. And the trophy
fish showed up as well right when they were supposed to appear.
One night, during hex, the guides and shop guys combined to bring seven browns to hand that stretched the tape at right around twenty-four inches. Fish of that caliber are true whoppers anywhere in the world, and a day like that helps put our

rivers on the map as real players in fantastic world of fly fishing.
And, though there’s still a lot of good hatches left on the docket like tricos and olives in the Upper River and the white fly hatch below Mio Dam as well as the last, best mousing moon phase of the year, Fall is coming and fishing will just get better.
If that doesn’t get you excited, the joys of the big woods are on the horizon. We’ve been running our bird dogs through the covers and we’ve been slinking down deer runs and looking for the best place to hang our bow hunting stands. The woods are alive. There’s fruit on every branch that will bear grouse food and heaviest stands have limbs bending under the weight. And the whitetail buck crop looks strong. I saw a bachelor group of four racked bucks cross the road only a mile from my house last week. It’s all very exciting.
I can’t really tell where I’d most like to be in the wild this Fall. Knee deep in the water or waist deep in the ferns or perched in the branches over of promising deer run. I guess I’ll just have to do it all!
Anyway, have a great Holiday and be sure to swing by the shop. It’s the end of Summer and we’ve got super sales and deals on all sorts of great, brand name gear. It’s time to stock up on surprising sales.
Hope to see you all soon!
