River Report - October 10, 2017

The Old Au Sable Fly Shop Fishing Report
We’ve continued with the Summer-like weather trend for the entire Fall so far and it’s been a tourism boon to our little Northern Michigan communities.  Folks love the warm and have made the trip Up North in big numbers.  But if the weatherman is going to earn his money this week, it looks like we’re in for more seasonable conditions.  And anyone who knows me knows that I love seasonable conditions.  It just gives hunters and fishermen a better chance at predicting what to do and what to expect in the October fields and streams.

Of course, I love that edge—perceived though it may be.  If the weather prediction holds, I’m guessing that the fishing will improve vastly over the coming week.  That means that small streamers and wet flies should combine with the possibility of hatching blue-winged olives to create some great fishing for Brook Trout dressed in spawning colors and maybe even for some thick bellied brown trout putting on the feed bag to prepare for the rigors of their mating season.

This has always been one of my favorite times to trout fish.  We bust out artfully styled streamers like the Gray Ghost, Black Ghost, Royal Coachman Streamer, and the venerable Micky Finn.  The flies are classic beauties and the fish that eat them are fantastically colored.

I also would consider fishing nymphs tied behind high floating dry flies.  One of the most memorable days I ever had was with one of my old friends doing just that exactly during this time frame.   My friend said, “Let’s count ‘em today and let’s see if we can catch fifty.”  The brook trout were insanely willing that afternoon and we turned off our mental clickers after only two-and-a-half hours.  And I watched a bobcat sneak to the end of a river logjam to get better look at my partner.  That was a great day.

The cool weather should also get the woodcock migration moving.  If that’s true the flights could be concentrated these next few weeks and the shooting could be fast.  It could also allow us to get our dogs running in the afternoons where we just might be able to catch grouse on their food sources.  It’s right to get excited.

We just may a couple of more spots open for The Old Au Sable Streamer Weekend on November 3, 4, and 5 for anyone interested in hunting large brown trout in our area.  I’ll be in a boat along with Sage Sales Representative Ben Hunting and Ben will have any Sage or Redington Rod that you may want to for a day.  I’m truly looking forward to the event and hope you can make it as well.  Check it out at http://www.oldausable.com/blog/brown-trout-safari/ .

Things are about to heat up with this cool down coming—I hope you get to find your time in our outdoors.

Thank you,

Andy
